Audubon Society of Central Arkansas Minutes

February 8, 2018, 7:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Cindy Franklin.  Sixteen people were present.

The January Minutes were approved on a motion by Bill Shepherd and second by Bill Campbell.

Jim Dixon presented the January treasurer’s report showing income of $1,149.73 and no expenses.

Cindy mentioned a field trip to (1) Two Rivers Park on Saturday February 17 and (2) the Great Backyard Bird Count February 16-19.

Dan Scheiman announced Blake Sasse would be the speaker in March about bats, Dan was a possible speaker in April and in May there is no meeting.  Both World Migratory Bird Day and the BirdLR Birdathon will take place on Saturday May 12.

Dan introduced the speaker Amanda Mathis who explained the role of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in taking measures to protect soil, water and wildlife.  NRCS works with private landowners who own 70% of all lands.

The program concluded at 8:05 followed by a short break.

Cindy mentioned the issue of commercially harvesting turtles will be back before the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in April.  The Center for Biological Diversity has been working in a number of states to get such harvesting banned as a threat to native turtle populations.

Cindy mentioned she had not yet received any feedback from the avian rehabbers she had contacted to see if they were in need of additional funding.

Dan made another plug for the BirdLR Birdathon.

Jane Gulley mentioned the need to archive ASCA Minutes, newsletters and other items.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
