Minutes from the February 2013 ASCA Meeting

Fletcher Library Meeting Room, 7:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Jane Gulley.  Barry Haas presented the January Minutes which were approved. Jim Dixon presented the Treasurer’s Report which was accepted. The February 23rd field trip to Halowell Reservoir and the Wrape Plantation, Bayou Meto Wildlife Management Area, was noted on the meeting agenda.

Dan Scheiman announced the March and April programs which were also listed on the agenda.  Under Old BGusiness a possible donation to national Audubon Society to support the Christmas Bird Count was discussed and deferred until March. Dan announced some statistics on the Little Rock and Lonoke Christmas Bird Counts – number of participants, hours volunteered, number of species, rare birds, etc. Dan then launched the unique “Love of Birds” Valentine’s Day program – anyone willing to share why they love birds and some stories about the birding experiences. Dan started by reading a written submission by Bill Shepherd who was unable to attend the meeting. Next Dan told why he loved birds, followed by Samantha Scheiman, Jane, Craig and Dale Provost, Cindy Franklin, Lynn Christie, Keith Hawkins, Doris Boyles, Dottie Boyles, and finally Rayma Hawkins. Brave souls, all.

Under New Business Website “Hotspots” were discussed and deferred until the March Meeting. Another item concerned a possible donation of $100 or more by ASCA which would get our name on a plaque at Two Rivers park for publicity purposes. Dan mentioned the upcoming Great Backyard Bird Count from February 15-18. The continued efficacy of the Rare Bird Hotline was discussed. Jim Dixon made a motion that a ASCA checking account be opened at First Security Bank and after a second by Dottie the motion passed. Dottie said a $100 donation had been made by one of her coworkers in memory of her mother. The donation will go to the Halberg Ecology Camp.

Under Other Business Barry made note that the third and final reading of the Lake Maumelle Land Use Plan and Zoning Code ordinances was scheduled to take place February 26 at the Pulaski County Quorum Court meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Barry Haas
